Harvest 2010 Hand Picking

Our Vineyard

The Georg Rafael Vineyard property is located in the Napa Valley. The entrance sits along Dry Creek Road, northwest of the town of Napa itself and just past the beautiful Allston Park. Upon entering, the property rises dramatically from the valley floor to over 400 feet at the very top.

The Georg Rafael Vineyard itself lies just within the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) and straggles the border of the Mt. Veeder AVA along Redwood Road on its other side. Due to its steep setting, in the lower foothills of the Mayacamas Mountain Range which front Mt. Veeder, we are able to produce bold, hillside fruit with low yields commonly associated with a mountain AVA.

The lower section of the vineyard is planted with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The upper section of the vineyard is now planted exclusively with clone 7 Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is primarily of the Fagan soil series with a sub-soil of fine silty clay loam.

Georg Rafael bought the piece of land that would become his vineyard in 1984. The original Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rootstock plantings were grown with incredible patience, care and attention on behalf of Georg by renowned Napa Valley vineyard consultant Alex Vyborny who remains with us to this day.

Over the years the most prestigious wineries of Napa Valley; Robert Mondavi Private Reserve, Duckhorn, Far Niente to name just a few; recognized the outstanding quality of the grapes from the Georg Rafael Vineyard and since the beginning have been buying the entire harvest except for several tons of grapes that are withheld for the Domaine Georg Rafael production. These Cabernet Sauvignon grapes come from the upper most corner of the vineyard, what we fondly refer to as the 'Congrye One' block.
